Pierre Kaffer is the latest top-tier professional driver to join the Fanatec GT2 European Series, with the Audi specialist mounting an attack on the Pro-Am title with the Italian LP Racing squad.
The German ace will compete in the #18 LP Racing Audi R8 LMS GT2 alongside Michael Doppelmayr, who returns for his second term in the series having competed in the Am category last year. There he clinched his maiden class win at Misano and managed to claim a place on every step of the podium thanks to top results at Imola, Spa-Francorchamps and Valencia alongside fellow Am driver, Elia Erhart.
Kaffer brings with him an unrivalled roll of honour which encompasses outright, and class wins across the spectrum of sportscar and GT racing spanning the last 20 years. The 46-year-old can count the 24 Hours of Le Mans, 12 Hours of Sebring and 1000km Nürburgring 24 Hours among those victories, all achieved in Audi machinery.
He now aims to add the Fanatec GT2 European Series outright and Pro-Am title to the list.
Kaffer commented: “I’m very happy to be a part of the Fanatec GT2 European Series this year with LP Racing and the fantastic Audi R8 GT2. From my side, it is an honour to be a part of everything and I’m really looking forward to driving together with Michael. He’s made such great steps in the last two years, so I’m really looking forward to 2023.”
Team Principal, Luca Pirri added: “I am very happy to confirm Michael in 2023, he did an outstanding job in 2022 and I am sure that with the help of racing ace Pierre Kaffer great results will be achieved.”
LP Racing returns for a third term in the series having taken Henry Hassid to the 2022 Am class crown, while achieving no fewer than 20 podium finishes across both classes from the team’s four-car squad. The Kaffer/Doppelmayr pairing in the #18 Audi confirms the first of multiple 2023 entries for the LP Racing crew.
The 2023 Fanatec GT2 European Series will commence with LP Racing’s home race for round one at Imola, Italy, 21-23 April.
