SPS Automotive Performance will give the Mercedes-AMG GT Track Series its competitive debut in round two of the Fanatec GT2 European Series next weekend at the Red Bull Ring.
The recently launched Mercedes-AMG GT Track Series will undergo a trial run in racing conditions to conclude its extensive development and testing phase in Austria. Limited to just 55 models, the new car has been specially developed for track days and clubsport events.
The invitational entry will be driven by SRO Motorsports Group Founder and CEO Stéphane Ratel and DTM legend and Mercedes-AMG brand ambassador Bernd Schneider. A regular competitor in the Fanatec GT2 European Series launched last year, Ratel is no stranger to the podium having earned a trio of second places to finish fourth in the 2021 Pro-Am standings.
DTM legend, Schneider will make his series debut in Styria. A five-time DTM champion, FIA GT1 World champion and former Formula 1 driver, Schneider will continue his role in gathering valuable learnings for the successful completion of the new model’s development programme.
Stephan Sohn, team principal SPS Automotive Performance: “Running the Mercedes-AMG GT Track Series in competitive conditions is a great and interesting challenge. The most important goal for the first step will be to get through the weekend without any issues and to gather valuable data. Also, our driver line-up is tailor-made for this test. We will be very motivated in the way we approach this magnificent task.”
Bernd Schneider, Mercedes-AMG brand ambassador: “I am really looking forward to this event. Driving the Mercedes-AMG GT Track Series under race conditions for the first time together with Stéphane Ratel and SPS Automotive Performance is a great and unique opportunity. Mercedes-AMG has designed a great car that combines many years of experience in motorsport and in developing performance cars.”
The second round of the Fanatec GT2 European Series joins the ADAC GT Masters race weekend at the Red Bull Ring next weekend, 20-22 May.
